“Well. We are orphans! What’s the worst that can happen? Well. I’m not an orphan.” And with that they were off into a night of fright. I tagged along as a freelance photographer working for Lehigh Valley Live. Slumped into the last plastic train car, a desiccated corpse looked out for me over my right shoulder as we bumped along.
This was a night of fun and scares for kids from the Children’s Home of Easton. Sponsored by Fran and Jan McBride, who own the new carousel in Bushkill Park. A teenager slumped onto one of the bench seats with a reluctant grin, and smaller children struggled onto ponies. Fran turned on the motor and the carousel began to spin as the white lights lining the roof flickered to life. He seemed nervous.
The children had a great time as the youngest whooped and hollered. Later, the smallest ran up to me in front of a butcher covered in fake blood yelling: “This is a no picture zone! No pictures!”
He was onto something. I couldn’t photograph their faces. It made for small shadows darting in front of dangerous subjects.
When I turned the assignment in, the reporters working on the story were expecting a night of fun rides, and instead I handed them photos of children witnessing killer clowns.
